Happy New Year
5 January 2007Both Christmas and New Year have come and gone without much comment from me, so I thought I’d jot down a few thoughts before it all fades into the haze that is my memory. I spent the time with family, and it was good to be back “up-north” where people speak properly! Actually it was astounding to notice the differences in not just the accents, but also the attitudes of people between here and back home. They say everyone’s more friendly in the north – well it’s true. People you pass on the street never speak to you down here in the south.

I was always told not to talk to strangers
That and it’s invading other peoples’ space. Or them invading ours. We just want to get on with our lives without people intruding on our thoughts. I’m sure if i met you at a bus stop or something you’d wonder why the weird man was talking to you.
I’d wonder what I was doing at a bus stop first!
But seriously, what’s wrong with saying ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’ as you pass people? Surely that’s not invading anyone’s space, it’s being polite. At least it is where I’m from.
I’m a northerner living down south too and I miss people who will actually look you in the eye and smile or say good morning.
Glad to see I’m not the only one!
